Welcome to Incarnation Church!

It is my pleasure and that of my pastoral staff, to welcome you
to Incarnation’s web site.
This web site was developed as part of our Centennial celebration.
It is with joy that I invite you and our community of faith
to accompany us as we prepare to celebrate our Centennial Year.

One hundred years ago, there was the challenge of establishing
a parish in the heart of a rapidly growing Washington Heights.
Archbishop John Farley appointed the Reverend Patrick J. Mahoney
with the task of founding a parish between the parishes of
St. Elizabeth’s and St. Rose of Lima.

The first Mass at Incarnation Parish was celebrated in a store between
172nd and 173rd street and St. Nicholas Avenue.

Through the decades, the wars, the depression and the building of the
famous George Washington Bridge, Incarnation and her parishioners,
have struggled for survival.

Thankfully, the founders of Incarnation parish believed in and
practiced stewardship. Despite the hard economic times, their efforts
made it possible for Incarnation Churchto be built. They were very
committed to the needs of the Church and to the community.

The demographics of the parish have changed a lot over the years. In
its early days, the parishioners of Incarnation were mostly of Irish,
German and Italian descent.

Today, the parish and neighborhood are predominantly Hispanic.
The majority are immigrants from the Dominican Republic.

For one hundred years God’s people have gathered to worship Our
Lord Jesus Christ at Incarnation. For one hundred years they have
celebrated the Eucharist, received the Sacraments and listened to the
Word of God.

I hope that as you visit our web pages, you will note the days of our
special events and personally make a visit to our beautiful church on
her hundredth birthday.

We welcome and invite you to join us in, “Celebrating One Hundred
Years of Prayer and Service at Incarnation”.
