The Reality of the Family Rosary
by Elizabeth Foss
The family that prays together, stays together. The old
cliche, often cited by our Protestant brethren, still rings
true. For Catholic families, that prayer time can be
especially rich and fruitful. Catholics have been given
the gift of the rosary.
If your family is not in the habit of praying the rosary
together, the mysteries of light offer you great
"marketing opportunity". Children like to be a part of
something historic. Tell them about the new mysteries
and encourage them to be among the first families to
pray these mysteries. If your children have never
prayed the rosary, tell them the stories of St.
Bernadette, St. Dominic and the children of Fatima. It
helps children to understand why we pray the rosary if
they recognize how we were given this great gift and
what it means in the context of the universal Church.
Frequently, when I mention the family rosary, mothers
ask me how I get my small ones to sit still or my bigger
children to pay attention cheerfully for a 25-minute,
five-decade rosary. Quite simply, I don't. We pray one
mystery a day. Because I want them to learn all the
prayers and teaching them is effortless if they hear
them repeated daily, we have our own abridged version
that includes all the prayers everyday, but only
requires one complete mystery.

Miraculous Medal Novena --- November 17th - 27th
In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Your love. Send
forth Your Spirit, and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
Let Us Pray
O God who did instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in the same
Spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in His consolation, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen
O Mary, conceived without sin. Pray for us who have recourse to you. (3 times)
O Lord Jesus Christ, who have vouchsafed to glorify by numberless miracles the Blessed Virgin
Mary, immaculate from the first moment of her conception, grant that all who devoutly implore her
protection on earth, may eternally enjoy Your presence in heaven, who, with the Father and Holy
Spirit, live and reign, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, who for the accomplishment of Your greatest works, has chosen the weak things
of the world, that no flesh may glory in Your sight; and who for a better and more widely diffused
belief in the Immaculate Conception of Your Mother, has wished that the Miraculous Medal be
manifested to Saint Catherine Labouré, grant, I beseech You, that filled with like humility, I may
glorify this mystery by word and work. Amen.
Memorare
Remember, O most compassionate Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to
your protection, implored your assistance, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired
with this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of Virgins, my Mother. To you I come; before you I
kneel sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your
clemency hear and answer them.
Novena Prayer
O Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of Our Lord Jesus and my Mother, penetrated with the most
lively confidence in your all-powerful and never-failing intercession, manifested so often through
the Miraculous Medal. I, your loving and trustful child, implore you to obtain for me the graces and
favors I ask during this Novena, if they be beneficial to my immortal soul, and the souls for whom I
pray. (here privately form your prayer requests) You know, O Mary, how often my soul has been the
sanctuary of your Son who hates iniquity. Obtain for me then a deep hatred of sin and that purity of
heart which will attach me to God alone so that my every thought, word and deed may tend to His
greater glory. Obtain for me also a spirit of prayer and self-denial that I may recover by penance
what I have lost by sin and at length attain to that blessed abode where you are the Queen of angels
and of all people. Amen.
An Act of Consecration to Our Lady
of the Miraculous Medal
O Virgin Mother of God, Mary Immaculate, I dedicate and consecrate myself to you under the title of
Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. May this Medal be for me a sure sign of your affection for me and
a constant reminder of my duties toward you. Ever while wearing it, may I be blessed by your
loving protection and preserved in the grace of your Son. O most powerful Virgin, Mother of my
Savior, keep me close to you every moment of my life. Obtain for me, your child, the grace of a
happy death; so that, in union with you, I may enjoy the bliss of heaven forever. Amen
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel

I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity.
There are none that can withstand Your power.
O show me herein You are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to Thee.
O show me herein You are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to Thee.
O show me herein You are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin,

Sweet Mother, I place this cause in Your hands.
Sweet Mother, I place this cause in Your hands.

my life you are with me.

First we state prayer intentions. I make them aware of the holy Father's intentions. Everyone has
the opportunity to offer his or her own intentions. We pray for peace in our family and peace in the
world. We pray for health concerns of friends and family. We have an especially long list of "baby
prayers" for babies born and not yet born.
Then, I read a short picture story version of the mystery.
Once the stories are read, everyone gets his or her own rosary to hold. The rosaries are kept in a
family basket, and reflect the personalities of their owners.
Each child who is old enough has a day of the week that is his to lead the rosary. We begin with the
Apostle's Creed and then we pray an Our Father and then 10 Hail Mary's, followed by the Glory Be,
the Fatima prayer and Hail, Holy Queen. We sit on the floor and tiny people are allowed to wiggle if
necessary. The child who is leader lights a candle at the beginning of our prayer time and our
toddler is allowed to snuff it at the end, provided he has been a "good little man".
While the rosary is particularly suited to small children who love the stories and the beads and the
counting, it grows up with our families as well. As children grow, they gain appreciation for the fact
that the stories are really mysteries--we can never know everything about them and we can always
learn more about Our Lord from them. I think older children also appreciate the opportunity to pray
as a family. When relationships in a family grow more complex and the inevitable tension of
adolescence begins to loom like an ominous dark cloud, it is comforting to have the ritual of family
prayer and an opportunity to offer prayers for family harmony. At least for those few minutes a
day, we can all be united in purpose.
It is gratifying to keep a written list of prayer intentions and then to reflect as a family on how those
prayers were answered. A written record of God's generosity provides children with tangible
evidence of His gracious omnipotence. Sometimes, though, it is the unvoiced prayers that are
answered most generously. There is a mantle of protection, offered by Our Lady's, comforting
maternal warmth that evades printed expression. It is a mystery of it's own really, a mystery
understood when a family prays the rosary together.

How To Pray The Rosary - The purpose of the Rosary is to meditate on the principal
events and mysteries in the life of Christ and to thank and praise God for them. There are twenty
mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five JOYFUL MYSTERIES, the
five LUMINOUS MYSTERIES, the five SORROWFUL MYSTERIES, and the five GLORIOUS MYSTERIES.
Make the Sign of the Cross and say the "Apostles' Creed" on the first bead below the crucifix.
Say the "Our Father."
Say three "Hail Marys" at cluster of 3 beads.
Say the "Glory be to the Father."
Announce the First Mystery; then say the "Our Father" on next single bead.
Say ten "Hail Marys," while meditating on the Mystery.
Say the "Glory be to the Father."
Announce the Second Mystery; then say the "Our Father." Repeat 6 and 7 and continue with Third,
Fourth and Fifth Mysteries in the same manner.
Those who pray the Rosary regularly would do well to be enrolled in the Confraternity to gain extra
spiritual benefits for each Rosary they pray.
After the Rosary say the Salve Regina:
HAIL, HOLY QUEEN, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor
banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of
tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile,
show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
V. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray. O GOD, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for
us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the
Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what
they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
After each decade say the following prayer requested by the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima:
"O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially
those who have most need of your mercy."
The Joyful mysteries are said on Monday and Saturday, the Luminous on Thursday,
the Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, and the Glorious on Wednesday and Sunday (with this exception:
Sundays of Christmas season - The Joyful; Sundays of Lent - Sorrowful)
THE APOSTLE'S CREED: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth and
in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin
Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried, He descended into hell; the
third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God,
the Father Almighty, from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the
Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the
resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
THE OUR FATHER: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. Amen.
THE DOXOLOGY: Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning
is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (this prayer is optional and may be said after all
Glory Be to the Fathers.....)
O my Jesus, have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Take all souls into
heaven, especially, those most in need of thy mercy. Amen.
THE HAIL MARY: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at
the hour of our death. Amen.
DECADE PRAYER - (prayer for priests): God, our Father, please send us holy priests, all for the
sacred and eucharistic heart of Jesus, all for the sorrowful and immaculate heart of Mary, in union
with saint Joseph. Amen.
